Phillip John Mackey to be inducted into Canadian Mining Hall of Fame

CEEC congratulates Phillip John Mackey on being chosen for induction into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame (CMHF) in 2022.

The CMHF, which was established in 1989, recognizes and celebrates individuals who have demonstrated outstanding lifetime achievements to the benefit of the Canadian mining industry.

Five new individuals will be inducted into its ranks in 2022, which will bring the total number of mining leaders honoured to 200. The organization said that the individuals honoured in the CMHF “have two things in common: their significant and lasting impact on Canada’s mining industry, and through their achievements, their contribution to the high standard of living shared by all Canadians.”

The CMHF said that Mackey, who was born in Australia, “is known worldwide as one of Canada’s most prominent metallurgists in the field of non-ferrous extractive metallurgy.”

During his career, he advanced the development of two significant copper smelting technologies that have benefited copper metallurgical plants around the world; he was a co-developer of the Noranda Reactor Process and co-invented the Noranda Converting Process. He is also a prolific author of technical papers, renowned lecturer, and inspirational mentor of young metallurgists.

He is also a strong supporter of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) and is a past president of the Metallurgical Society (MetSoc).

The five new members of the CMHF will be formally inducted at a gala dinner and ceremony, which will be held in August 2022 at the Palais Royale Ballroom in Toronto, Canada.
