Exclusive video interview with FLSmidth’s Peter Flanagan

Peter Flanagan, Senior Vice President – Global Project Sales, Executive Accounts and Key Commodities at FLSmidth, talked to Ailbhe Goodbody for Spotlight Leader Conversations, CEEC’s new series of video interviews with leading people in the mineral processing industry. The result was a rich and really informative discussion about how big processing equipment is changing to rise to the challenge of net zero and less water use in mining.

In the conversation, Flanagan talked about FLSmidth’s MissionZero sustainability programme to achieve net zero carbon and water by 2030. In his opinion, collaboration between technology suppliers, mining companies, academia and other stakeholders is key to achieving such goals, and groups such as CEEC are instrumental in bringing everyone together to spark discussions and make connections.

He also discussed how a holistic pit-to-plant focus can incorporate technologies such as HGPRs, coarse particle flotation, in-pit crushing and conveying and preconcentration can eliminate water and energy waste.

“There's no way to transition to this green economy without increasing the amount of metals that we pull out of the ground,” he added. “So of course, the question is how do we do that with the minimum impact? We talk about low carbon… but in mining, I think it's also important to us to be low impact. Overall, that's really what MissionZero stands for. It's not just zero carbon; it's zero impact, zero water waste, zero energy.”

He concluded: “It’s an exciting time to be in the mining industry.”
