2015 Delprat Distinguished Lecturer: Dr. Bill Johnson

The AusIMM Metallurgical Society is very pleased to announce that the 2015 Delprat Distinguished Lecturer is the well-known and highly regarded Dr. Bill Johnson.

The 2015 Delprat Lecture is entitled ‘Future Mineral Processing Challenges Based on 45 Years of Applying Science and Engineering to Mineral Processing’ and draws on Bill’s extensive experience confronting metallurgical and technical challenges in research, operations and applying new technologies. Bill’s presentation will outline future challenges for improving mineral processing technologies and developing new technologies based on the technical weaknesses of existing processes. To assist in successfully addressing these future challenges, Bill will describe some important learnings from past experiences in dealing with processing challenges. These technical experiences will be principally based on the flotation of sulphide minerals. The presentation will include some important tools for the analysis of weaknesses in mineral processing technologies, including their evolution since 1960 and their need for further improvement and change.

The 2015 Delprat Distinguished Lecture series will be presented in

Sydney (August 24),

Brisbane (September 3),

Perth (September 6 as a precursor to the MetPlant conference),

Kalgoorlie (September 9),

Roxby Downs (September 16),

Adelaide (September 17),

Mt. Isa (November 24) and

Melbourne (November 26).

Bill Johnson has worked with Asarco in Arizona, lectured at the University of Melbourne, researched with CSIRO, and was Minerals Processing Research Manager with MIM Ltd. He directed development of the circuit for the McArthur River ore, which led to the Isa Mill technology. He is presently Senior Principal Consulting Engineer at Mineralurgy and Adjunct Professor at JKMRC.
