Application of soda sludge in the preparation of cement clinker

Highlights:

➢ The Cl- of soda sludge decreased from 6.4 wt.% to 0.26 wt.% by water washing.

➢ The cement synthesized with 25.64 wt.% water washed soda sludge meets the 52.5-grade cement.

➢ The chlorine-bearing species in the cement transformed to chlorine-free species after Cl- removal by water washing.

Abstract: Soda sludge was used as the supplementary calcareous material to synthesize cement clinker and the effect of chloride ion (Cl-) in soda sludge on the properties of clinker samples was investigated. Results showed that the Cl- content in soda sludge has significant influence on the mechanical properties and mineral phases of the clinker samples. When the Cl- content in the soda sludge was reduced from 6.4 wt.% to 0.26 wt.% by water washing, the flexural and compressive strengths of the synthesized cement samples increased from 4.3 MPa and 26.9 MPa to 7.2 MPa and 3 52.7 MPa, respectively. And, the mineral phases of the clinker samples also transformed from chlorine-bearing species such as calcium aluminate chloride and calcium silicate chloride, to chlorine-free species such as tricalcium silicate, dicalcium silicate, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite.
